Former President Kufuor Consoles Mahama

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor paid a solemn visit to former President John Dramani Mahama at his residence on Thursday to express his condolences following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers and six others.

The deeply emotional visit comes after the devastating crash of a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The crash resulted in the death of eight prominent individuals, including:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence

  • Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation

  • Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Samuel Aboagye – Former Member of Parliament

  • Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

  • Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

Mr. Kufuor, visibly moved by the loss, offered words of comfort to Mr. Mahama, whose government appointed many of the deceased to critical national assignments. The former presidents shared a moment of silence in memory of the departed, reflecting on the immense national service and dedication exhibited by the victims throughout their careers.

Speaking briefly to the media after the private meeting, President Kufuor described the tragedy as a “national calamity” and praised the leadership and service of the late ministers.

“This is a moment of deep sorrow for our country. These were dedicated men who gave their best to Ghana. We must unite in grief and in strength to honor their memory,” he said.

Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude for the visit and the outpouring of support he has received. He noted that the loss transcends partisan lines and must serve as a call to unity in safeguarding the lives of public servants.

“The pain is heavy, but the solidarity shown by Ghanaians across the political spectrum brings comfort. We have lost heroes,” Mr. Mahama remarked.

The government has since declared a one-week period of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country. A state funeral is being planned for the deceased, while investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
