Savannah Region:5 Killed, 6 Injured in Deadly Land Dispute at Gbenyiri

Tragedy struck in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region after a violent clash over a parcel of land in Gbenyiri left five people dead and six others with severe injuries.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, is believed to have stemmed from a longstanding disagreement between two rival factions. Reports by Joy News confirmed that the Chief of Kalba is among those who lost their lives in the confrontation.

According to accounts, tensions escalated when the Chief of Gbenyiri returned home from a visit. Out of courtesy, the Kalba Chief instructed his son to escort him back to his community. However, the group was allegedly ambushed by one of the disputing sides, sparking the deadly attack.

Confirming the development to Graphic Online, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Mr. Sinkina Saaka, explained that the conflict originated from the sale of land by a local chief to a private developer. When the developer later attempted to begin construction, some community members resisted, leading to mounting friction.

“It all started when the chief sold a piece of land to the developer some years ago. When the developer came to work on the land, the community members prevented him. The chief and his son later visited the community to ascertain the situation and were physically attacked,” Mr. Saaka disclosed.

Police and security officials are said to have been deployed to the area to restore calm as investigations continue into the incident.
